Sangria

This delicious and refreshing sangria recipe is perfect anytime of year.

I have to admit, I'm not a huge fan of wine; however, I will happily grab a glass of this sangria whenever available. It is so flavourful and refreshing, the perfect patio beverage. Great for summer celebrations like Canada Day or the 4th of July. If you are entertaining a large group, make two batches because it will go fast!

This is the type of drink that can be easily adjusted for any time of year with a quick swapping of seasonal fruit. It can also be adjusted to your own tastes quite easily. Don't like strong citrus notes? Swap the grapefruit for apple and the lime for pineapple, or any other favourite fruit.

Though this can be served immediately, it's best to allow the flavours to combine for a few hours in the refrigerator before serving.

TIP: Other red wines that will work well in sangria are Frappato, Malbec, Bobal, Carignan, or other low tannin wines.

Ingredients

(Makes 12 servings)

  • 1, 750 ml bottle Pinot Noir, or other low tannin wine, chilled

  • 2 cara cara oranges, 1 juiced, 1 halved and sliced

  • 1 cup (150 grams) red grapes, sliced in half

  • 1 Asian pear, peeled, cored and cut into small cubes

  • 1, 1/2 cups (170 grams) strawberries, hulled and sliced

  • 1 medium red grapefruit, halved and sliced

  • 1 lemon, sliced into thin rounds

  • 1 lime, sliced into thin rounds

  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) brandy

  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) maple syrup

  • ice cubes

Directions

In a large pitcher, add the orange juice, sliced orange, grapes, Asian pear, strawberries, sliced grapefruit, sliced lemon, and sliced lime. Add the brandy and maple syrup then mix well to dissolve the syrup.

Add the wine to the pitcher and stir well. Test the drink for sweetness and add additional maple syrup if you prefer a sweeter beverage.

While it can be served immediately, it's best to store the Sangria in the refrigerator for 4 to 6 hours to allow the flavours to combine. Serve with ice and marinated fruit.
