Cheesy Meatball Casserole

Zesty and cheesy meatball casserole will have the family racing to the dinner table.

The aroma of saucy, cheesy, homemade meatballs baking in the oven will have every mouth positively watering in anticipation.

Though these can be served with a simple salad on the side, pasta is the natural side dish for these saucy meatballs. Any pasta style will do, so whatever is on hand will be perfect.

I like to prepare a double batch of these meatballs and freeze them before they are cooked to make future meals even easier to pull together. In an airtight container they should last at least 3 months. These also work great for weekly meal prepping, and to switch things up, drop the cheese and sauce and add these meatballs to soups.

Ingredients

(Makes 6 servings)

  • 1lb ground beef

  • 1/2 sweet onion, finely minced

  • 1 clove garlic, finely minced

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (gluten-free if needed)

  • 1/2 cup whole milk

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

  • 1 tablespoon butter

  • 1 jar (740ml) marinara sauce

  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

Directions

Preheat oven to 375°F / 190°C and set aside a medium-sized casserole dish.

In a mixing bowl add the ground beef, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, milk, eggs, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and ground black pepper. Mix until all ingredients are well incorporated. Divide into 12 and form into balls. Set aside.

In a sauté pan over medium-high heat, add the butter. Once the butter is sizzling, place the meatballs onto the pan and brown all sides.

Spread 1/2 jar of the marinara sauce into the bottom of the casserole dish then transfer the meatballs into a casserole dish. Pour over remaining marinara sauce and sprinkle evenly with cheese. Cover the casserole dish (with foil paper or lid) and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Increase oven temperature to 425°F / 220°C and remove the cover. Bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes or until the cheese turns golden brown and the sauce is bubbling.

Serve with your favourite pasta side.
